Cedros Island’s waters became part of a Mexican Biosphere Reserve (a natural protected area) in 2016. This decree resulted from a 10-year process to stop predatory over-fishing by hundreds of shrimp trawlers and dozens of sardine and tuna seiners that were extremely destructive to the environment. Today, locals and tourists alike enjoy cleaner water and more abundant and diverse species of game fish.
