REEBS_Logo_SmallFrom Mike Ryba of REEBS LURES

If you’re going to be targeting Bass, Grouper, Sheephead, or Halibut on your Cedros fishing trip there are some recommendations of gear and lures to use.

Rods: Phenix M1 Inshore Series 7’7″ and 7’3″ models
Reels: Shimano Curado E series or any 6:1 high speed, low profile reel will do
Baits: 6-8″ swimbaits, weedless jigs, 1-2oz lead heads, heavy saltwater spinnerbaits, weedless baits
After 18 trips to Cedros Island with Cedros Outdoor Adventures, I have been able to narrow down pretty well the inshore necessities. There are selections that work better than others, and I’ll touch on them all.
First off, Cedros Calico are mean! Your gear will get beat up, drags toasted, and rods pushed to the limit. I found Phenix rods to be both tough and resilient in this environment. The m1 series are amazing rods and are recommended in the 7’7″ and 7’3″ models. I bring 3, m1 series with me and pair them up with Shimano Curado E reels.
The Curado E from Shimano are tough. I like to back them with 60# Spectra and in normal circumstances a 35# flouro leader is sufficient. When the kelp is thick, I’ll bump the leader up to 40#. Bring 3 setups: 1 for your swimbaits, 1 for your weedless jigs, and 1 for your weedless baits/hard baits. I always bring 1 extra reel for backup.
As far as baits go, there are options. If you plan to only fish Calico, on a Friday to Monday trip, then here’s what I would bring:
100 6″ swimbaits in baitfish patterns
 25 lead heads 1oz-2oz
 50 weedless baits
15 Owner weedless Beast Hooks in 9/0 and 10/0
 10 weedless jigs
 5 saltwater spinnerbaits/assorted hard baits
 Thumb wrap
*Double these amounts for longer trips*
Since I am a lure manufacturer, I can build you the perfect arsenal with baits made for this island. Not every trip is the same, and the Calico fishing is always changing. It’s important to have all the bases covered. You can reach my either on my web site at www.reebslures.com or call me to discuss what works for you at (760) 716-5873 Hope to see you out there!

FROM TAYLOR PANTEL

If I had to narrow it down to 25-35 lbs of gear, here is what I’m going to bring next year:

  • RODS: (3) 7′ rods.  (1) 40# rod, (1) 50# rod, (1) 60# rod.  (1) 8′ Heavy bass rod.  65lb spectra.
  • I recommend fishing exclusively spectra with a short 3′ top shot of Flourocarbon, 50 or 60 lb. High speed reels for fishing the yoyo iron and surface iron are a must if you really want to maximize your opportunities.
  • JIGS: Salas7x heavys are the jig of choice at Cedros.  Blue and white, scrambled egg, all white.  Those are the best 3 colors.
  • You also want to have some salas7x lights as well in the same colors in case the fish are on the surface. I switch out all my treble hooks on all my jigs to big 10/0 or 11/0 single hooks so those big Cedros yellows cannot pull loose!!! I would bring 3 of each color in the light and the heavy.
  • Don’t forget to bring an assortment of 5-8″ Pearl swimbaits.  Colors of choice would be browns, reds, greens, blues,
  • Bring leadheads from 3/4-2oz.
  • Bring 2 pairs of polarized sunglasses.  A sun hat.  All clothing on pangas should be waterproof, fast drying fabric so you stay dry and comfortable.
  • RODS. 40#,50#,60#
  • JIGS. ***salas7x heavy .colors blue and white, scrambled egg, all white.
  • ***salas7x light.  colors. same as above
  • ***swimbaits for bass and yellows.  Pearl Swimbaits.  Any colors really they all work.
  • ***High speed reels.
  • ***flex wrap for line cuts
  • Advil or ibuprofin for those sore muscles after pulling on fish all day.
